Well I am also a smoker (gee go figure), I have been trying to quit since April but to no avail (no offence but it takes more than simple will power, nicotine is a drug and it’s harder to kick than heroin, doubt that? ask any doctor) , wanting to quit is half the battle, the other half is the hellish with drawls that can make you feel like your dying, and can make you ready to kill anyone who gets on your nerves, being that I WANT to quit and just can’t do it on my own no matter how hard I try, I asked my Doctor for help, he gave me Champix.
I set my quit date for 9 days after the first pill (that would be the 16th of August), how ever I just may be able to stop before that, I had 5 smokes today, and I must say I hated every one of them, I don’t really feel the need to light up, I don’t know why I had 5 , perhaps just to take the edge off? or habit? I don’t know, but I do know tomorrow will be better.
There are side effects with Champix, for me I don’t feel suicidal or depressed, I do feel tired and want to nap more than usual, I have little appetite which means instead of loading my plate as usual , I just take very small servings and pick at it, right now I can’t eat Tuna, it makes me gag which sucks because I am worse than a cat when it comes to tuna! I love tuna mayo and onion sandwiches!
Food tastes odd to me at the moment, partly due to the drug champix and partly due to not hardly smoking, when you smoke it makes food taste different, so not smoking also changes the taste of food.
I have wicked vivid dreams due to the anti smoking meds, they warned me of this, I don’t mind as I tend to enjoy my dreams no matter how bizarre or the contents etc. I have always really enjoyed my dreams, just for now they are wickedly vivid which makes them all the more exciting and entertaining . ( yes I can tell when I am dreaming)
I am calm and relaxed and the with drawls are manageable not physical or psychological pain, like I said just tired, oh and my ears are constantly ringing, I know this shall pass with time so I am okay with everything, this won’t last forever, it takes 3 full days for the nicotine to leave my system , so even though I am currently still smoking which I won’t be doing much longer, I know the amount of nicotine in my system has been drastically reduced, I went from 1 pack (25 smokes) per day down to just 5 smokes in 4 short days…. that’s pretty freaking AWESOME! tomorrow will be even better.
I am going to turn my health issues around, first step is quitting smoking, second step is to exercise more ( I already walk around 5 miles per day), I am going to put an ad up in the post office asking for a bike buddy, someone who wants to go pedal biking for a couple miles once or twice per week since my wife currently can not join me.
I am also planning on joining our local fitness center , I have set my goal realistically to reach 175 pounds, no time limit, just daily exercise, once I hit 175 I will ask my doctor if that’s enough, if not I will set another goal of 10 pounds and go from there.

So Monday afternoon we walked down to the post office (just 2 blocks from home) a walk that usually takes me around 3 minutes, took us 15, but we made it, from there she wanted to walk a little more so we walked another block to the little general store (the only store in the village) I bought her an iced tea and we walked home , (20 minutes from the store to our home).
That walk, her first in 5 months, was a little too much for my wife and she has been paying for it since, she is ever so tired and run down and has spent the last 2 days napping at various times throughout the day. I have gently told her that her next walk will only be to the end of the road and back, or perhaps over to our friends Wayne & Karen’s house for a visit and tea ( about a half a block walk) until she gets more strength back. She’s okay with that plan, she just doesn’t want to be house bound in the summer.
So our little family got another huge surprise from the community/village we live in, this Saturday they are holding the first annual Celebration of Life Day , they have organized quite a few events, a parade ( they even recruited a Cadet troop from Regina to come out and march), a vintage/muscle car car show and shine , a community BBQ, a slow pitch tourney, a small casino, beer gardens and silent auction, and a meet and greet as well as a few other events, all this is being done for my wife Pauline, to show community support and to help her celebrate life, all the proceeds are going to her.
To say that we are overwhelmed is a drastic understatement, I just found all this out yesterday, when I was talking to Dewy ( a neighbor) his son took over the family farm and donated a brand new swather for the silent auction ! I nearly passed out when I found this out.
So I have been coaxing my wife to get plenty of rest between now and Saturday as she has a spot on the town float to sit comfortably as the Queen for a day , she will be busy Saturday talking to folks and partaking in some events, the one she is most excited about is the car show, like me she loves cars, especially classic cars & trucks, and of course our son “Hammy” will be in the parade as there is a bicycle decorating party friday night for the parade saturday, I will get lots of photos and post them here on my blog(s) .
This little village continues to amaze us, 6 years ago we moved out here to start a new life away from the cities and the crime, we were unsure how we would be received as we are not your usual mainstream family, we were met with open arms and a welcome to our community potluck gathering and we were given the 50 cent tour of the village and school, someone had even hand drawn a map of the back roads (grids) showing where they went, whose farm was where and where the local dump was located ( I still got lost as the map wasn’t 100% accurate), we were the token lesbian couple and the village seemed to take a strange kinda pride in that fact.
Fast forward 6 years, we have become a big part of the community, volunteering our time and sometimes resources to what ever event pops up, letting weary travellers park their camper for a day or two on our property , sometimes even running power and water out to them, setting aside an old shed and a couple trees for the village kids to use as forts and build tree houses in ( at last count we have 5 tree houses in various stages of completion back there), my wife faithfully has taken part in a community cooking bee in the fall (harvest) where the ladies auxiliary cook and bake up a storm and take their goods out to the farmers around the clock at harvest time.
I usually hire a couple young teens every summer to work at my lawn& yard maintenance business, and can be found in my work shop with a couple kids teaching them the basics of woodworking/construction 101 or what not, so it’s not like we keep to ourselves out here, we are blessed to live in a small community that accepts us as we are flaws and all, I can’t imagine living anywhere else , and the support we have from the community really drives home the sense of belonging .

One of the events was a Car Show/show and shine , I took some photo’s to show you what some Canadian Country folks can do with cars, some of the cars were simply amazing!
This is my Beautiful wife (the Queen for a day) standing beside a Model T Ford , she really liked this car, she was able to walk around and talk to people for almost 2 hours without the use of an oxygen tank! She was really overwhelmed by the community support and was left speechless a few times.
This Beauty is a 1956 Chev , restored to completely original and stock, I rather like this car and could easily see myself cruising around in it , if only I had that kind of money!
This little mini bucket is not actually a Ford model T at all, we have some very creative folks in our community, this is a street legal home built from scratch lady owned micro rod, the engine is actually a 900 cc Kawasaki motorcycle engine, the front wheels are actually motorbike wheels, the back wheels are 13 inch from a chevy sprint (car) the bucket (where you sit) is a single seater and it is actually made from a wheel barrow… No Lie!! I didn’t believe it either at first until I talked to the owners husband (he helped her build this), it is an amazing little car, and will do an easy 140mph down the highway, and yes it is chain driven and has the 6 speed motorcycle transmission.
My Beautiful wife standing beside my friend Harvey’s Isetta, this is a cute little 3 wheeled car and the only one in Saskatchewan, my friend puts it on a trailer and pulls it behind his motorhome where he uses this little car to scoot around the campgrounds and to run errands.
This is our son “Hammy” sitting in a chevy S-10 truck, why did I take a photo of this truck? well the photo didn’t turn out as I had hoped, the paint work on this truck is extremely beautiful, it looks black but is infact many multiple colors and it shimmers in the sun and seems to change colors before your eyes, it also sports a 327 corvette engine and suspension, I am told it is “wicked” fast .
These are just a few of the over 50 cars and trucks that arrived for the car show, the cars came from all over Saskatchewan to show support for my wife, there are many events happening in our village, there was a softball tourney , an extreme road hockey event, car show, parade, a live concert and the band Prospekt donated their time for free, a casino and beer gardens, there are lots of kid sports and events happening as well and lots of family activities , they are capping it off tonight at 10pm with fireworks, all this to celebrate my wife and to celebrate life, all the proceeds from todays events go to my wife. We ourselves just found out about all this and what it was about less than 2 weeks ago, this is overwhelming to us to say the least, my wife was reduced to tears of happiness and gratefulness many times today, and I confess even I the emotional rock of my family got choked up a few times as I talked with people.
Guess that’s about all for now, I’ll post more photo’s in the next blog, and probably continue to do so for a few more blog posts as there are over 100 photos of todays events.

I miss you being here at home, I am so lonely now.
I have accepted that you are no longer here in Body, I know you are here in Spirit, I can feel you from time to time, I know it is you that helps me get through the day, I just wish I could hear your sweet voice once more, I can only pray that you know that my Love for you shall never fade, I can only hope that your Spirit can feel the Love that I have for you.
I am lonely without you, even though our friends come by to check on Hammy and I , I remain alone and lonely, our friends just can not fill that void, the people I run into at the post office or store just lower their eyes and shuffle their feet uncomfortably when I enter, they see my grief and don’t know what to say, what can they say? Nothing said can heal the wound I now carry.
Don’t you worry though Darling, I shall be alright, this I do know, when you were at my side you gave me such strength and courage , I still have that and have come to realize that yes I can and will be a single parent, that yes I can and will be able to look after the house and the animals and yard, I have come to realize that I can and will go on living, I will be alright Darling.
Hammy too will be alright, he misses you so much, he has begun cuddling me like he used to do with you, he wants and needs to be held, he wants and needs to know that he will be alright, he wants and needs to know that we will be alright, he grieves in his own way, but don’t worry Darling, I am here for him, I will help him and hold him and comfort him.
I’ve been looking at all our pictures again Darling, do you know your eyes are sparkling in every single one of them?, oh how I miss gazing into your eyes, I miss that sparkle so much, I sorely miss the sound of your laughter and your smile that lit up the rooms, I miss your sweet voice, I miss holding you at night while you slept, I miss kissing you each morning, I miss you so much my Darling
I miss our country walks and our Sunday drives, I miss everything about you, I miss you playfully nattering at me , giving me hell for some bone headed stunt I’ve pulled, I miss your squeals of laughter when I had one of those “here hold my beer and watch this” moments, it always ended with a trip to the doctor and a couple stitches, but damn Darling it was always worth it, just to hear your laughter and have you fussing over my wounds.
I miss the times I made you angry, Darling I never once meant to make you angry, but I have to confess Darling, you always looked so cute when you were angry, you never once made me angry, I have always stopped myself from anger because I never wanted to hurt you in any way . Darling I shall do the same with Hammy, I promise I shall never raise my voice or a hand to him, you taught me how to parent well.
Things are different now Darling, please allow me time to adjust, I will get there and I am trying very hard, I hide my sorrow around Hammy, always being strong for him, as I always did with you, I grieve late at night when I am alone, so alone, honestly Darling I am struggling with being alone, I don’t know why God took you from me, I must have been a terrible person in a past life to deserve this, they say Karma always gets you, well Darling Karma has beat me down and I do not understand why?
Darling please, know my love for you will always be strong and never cease, I love you now and always until the end of time, please wait for me in Heaven, I will be there in time.
I must go now Darling, our son will be home from school soon and I have to pull myself together for him, just know that not a moment goes by that I do not think of you, you still my everything and when God took you away he took a big part of my very soul when he took you, I now have an emptiness inside me that will never heal until we are again together.

Easy RUM
Two pounds of brown sugar per one gallon of water and one cup of honey for every ten gallon batch. Starting hydrometer reading of about 90. Do not exceed 100. Add 1 to 3 ozs of yeast per 10 gallons of mash.
Heat one fourth of your water to 120 or 130 degrees only hot enough to melt the sugar, then stir in your sugar and then the honey last. Pour it into your fermenter and finish filling with cool water to cool it down to 80 degrees. Take a hydrometer reading and adjust as needed. The add your yeast. 6 to 14 days to ferment.
I am pretty sure making moonshine is illegal here in Canada as well, however you Can buy beer, wine,and spirits making kits, and with all the required equipment build a decent still as well, so as long as its not sold and only used for personal use and brewed in batches of 2 to 10 gallon batches then theres not a lot the law can do about it.
I am working on a simple stove top still made from a pressure cooker and about 10 feet of 1/4 inch copper pipe,when I perfect it I will post pictures.

Okay so having said that, I want to tell you a bit of my last year with my wife, to say it was stressful is a drastic understatement , it was a year filled with stress, worry, panic, sorrow,prayer,fear,anger(anger that she was stricken with Cancer, not anger at her), it was a year where I almost lost my wife many times, it was a year filled with 8 rounds of Chemo that required a 1 week hospital stay each round, it was during those times she almost died, it was a year of very little sleep as I was looking after my wife 24/7, Everyone including our son to a back seat in order of importance, friends family it didn’t matter, nobody was as important as my wife, myself included, financially I took a HUGE hit, our son (just 13) ran my business as I didn’t have the time, I was spending $500+ per month just in gasoline getting her to Doctors and to the Hospital, another $400 a month easily on drugs that were not covered under our Canadian Health Care system , another $350 or so per month just on her special diets ( Boost or Ensure drinks are $13.99 for a six pack) and so much more, my entire world revolved around her and keeping her alive and with us for as long as possible.
that was my life and so much more from December 2013 through to January 26 2015, Now ontop of my grief, I also carry so much guilt, guilt over pretty much abandoning our son, yes I fed him and made sure he had everything he needed, I told him I loved him but never truly gave him what he needed most….. Time, for a year he was pushed aside while I focused on my wife, I am just now beginning to really get to know my son, all I have now is Time so I focus it all on him.
I feel guilt for pushing all our friends back and family too, I’d rarely talk to any of them unless they phoned and my wifes side of the family harbors deep resentment towards me for that because I didn’t keep them updated on her as often as I perhaps should of.
I feel a deep sense of guilt because I feel relieved that it is all over, it’s hard to explain, I feel relief because now I have time for myself and others, to try and repair the damage I have done from pushing people back, I feel relief because financially I am slowly recovering ( I borrowed a shit ton of money of the course of the last year to make sure my wife had everything she needed, to keep my car running etc.) I am finally able to pay off those loans 1 or 2 at a time, with each debt that is paid I feel relief.
I feel guilt because I am slowly starting to live again, not simply exist, I feel guilt because I am relieved that all the stress and worry and fear are gone, I feel guilty for feeling relieved, and that guilt makes my grief so much harder to bare.
I have guilt because there are days (though few and far between) where I indulge in a laugh and a smile, and I have brief moments of happiness and contentment, I feel guilty for that, I still grieve hard and to be honest, I cry every night as I lay in bed, the same bed I have shared with my wife for the last 18 years, it’s now so cold and empty, I miss my wife so very much and can’t remember the happy times without shedding tears.
It’s hard on me when I am grocery shopping and in malls, I’ve never done either without her at my side, I see families together and it hurts me deep, I have to duck down an empty isle to dry my tears, I have difficulty driving alone as well, the 30 odd miles to the city may as well be 3000 miles, the drive seems longer now and it is certainly much lonelier, there’s no one to enjoy the scenery and nature with anymore.
